REBRANDING THE LONG WAR, Part 1
Obama does his Bush impression
This week's summit between United States President Barack Obama and Afghan President Hamid Karzai and President Asif Ali Zardari of Pakistan was less about saving lives than it was about rhetorically re-inventing - and physically relocating - the past administration's "global war on terror". The question is: how far will the three leaders go to wipe out al-Qaeda in Afghanistan or halt the Predator drone war? - Pepe Escobar

A right path for India's left
Seen as irrelevant by voters due to their anti-Western outlook, India's leftist parties have lost support since a proud showing at the last elections. Uzbekistan mixes rich and poor
Former Soviet republic Uzbekistan may have somewhat recovered from the post-dissolution economic crash that hit many of its counterparts, but prosperity continues to elude it. Thanks to a fossilized political structure led by the uncharismatic President Islam Karimov - who would rather focus on the Great Game than economics - it is a rich country filled with poor people. - Ian Williams
