H1 New York Times In New Afghan Strategy, Obama Will Add Troops The president plans to further bolster U.S. forces in Afghanistan and will set benchmarks for progress in fighting Al Qaeda and the Taliban in Afghanistan and Pakistan, officials said.

DAVID BROOKS The Winnable War At the end of a trip to Afghanistan, despite personal skepticism, it was hard not to be infected by the optimism of the people who are working there.

PAUL KRUGMAN The Market Mystique The top officials in the Obama administration still believe in the magic of the financial marketplace and in the prowess of the wizards who perform that magic.

Obama's Big Plan for Afghanistan Read it at Politico In Friday's speech on Afghanistan, President Obama will announce a plan to send 4,200 new troops and hundreds of civilians to the embattled nation, Politico reports. "He's gone all in," said Politico's White House source. "This is Obama's war. He's pushed all the chips to the center of the table." Among those chips is an aggressive new benchmark system for quelling militants, reports the New York Times. The strategy is remarkably similar to America's Iraq policy of two years ago, which aimed to guide the unstable nation's fight against insurgency and push for permanence. The new troops will add to the 17,000 new troops Obama ordered for Afghanistan last month.

When a withdrawal is not a withdrawal
United States President Barack Obama's decision to go along with the military proposal for a "transition force" of 35,000 to 50,000 troops in Iraq represents a complete abandonment of his own original policy of combat troop withdrawal and an acceptance of what the military wanted all along - the continued presence of several combat brigades well beyond mid-2010. - Gareth Porter

Why Turkey Belongs in the EU

BY: Sigurd Neubauer | Diplomatic Courier This time, the choice facing the Turkish Republic is whether Ankara should continue its path towards becoming a full fledged member of the European Union, or if Turkey should adopt a “neo Ottoman” foreign policy brokering conflicts between Israel and Syria and between the United States and the Islamic Republic of Iran.

Iraq serves Turkey a rare treat
Asia Times In the first visit by a Turkish president to Iraq in 33 years, Abdullah Gul was made an unexpected offer by his hosts: Iraqi Kurdistan-based rebels would lay down their arms - thereby ending a state of war with Turkey that has lasted for 30 years - in exchange for a pardon for all Kurds who have fought the Ankara government.
