Our Great Recession
By Niall Ferguson New York Times,
Ferguson says we may be in what can be called a Great Recession. He predicts it won't produce as steep a fall in American output as the Depression, but it could be as long in duration. He cites the fact that this is taking place as the rest of the world is doing even worse than America, and there have been only two consecutive quarters of declining gross domestic product. He says he could imagine two consecutive years of contraction, with two more lean years after that.

The L Curve By Nouriel Roubini New York Times, Roubini says we are in a global recession that will last at least until the end of the year, but more likely 36 months due to low GDP growth and an unemployment rate rising toward 10 percent. If policies are not enacted, he says we could enter a near-depression or stag-deflation, which is a combination of economic stagnation and price deflation, like Japan experienced in the 1990s. Link to full text in primary source.

Beware the False Dawn By Steven S. Roach New York Times, Roach says it would be premature to declare an end to America's recession at the first sign of a resumption of growth because consumers are in poor shape due to a decade of living and borrowing beyond their means. As a result, he predicts the recession will not end before 2010 at the soonest or 2011 at the latest. Link to full text in primary source.

By William Lind Blog: Defense and the National Interest, 3/2/2009
Lind contends that US tactics in Afghanistan are futile and actually create more of the enemy through their heavey handedness. Because US officers do not know the proper tactics for an insurgency, they rely on airpower to make up their deficiency. However, airpower tends to kill civilians along with the enemy and therefore creates more bad will in a vicious cycle. Lind is the author of "The Maneuver Warfare Handbook."
