Wall Street Journal Cyprus Sabotage By MORTON ABRAMOWITZ and HENRI BARKEY Turkey's political turnaround should not be hurt by the Cyprus issue. While making clear that he intends to negotiate a Cyprus resolution on the basis of a bizonal, bicommunal federation, he should hold firm on not opening the ports. If Mr. Papadopoulos and EU are not ready for real negotiations, Mr. Erdogan might announce that Turkey has no choice but to plan for a long period of nonsolution. His options include a serious economic development program to strengthen the Turkish side of the island. Mr. Erdogan could also make a determined effort to use his political capital in the Muslim world to gain recognition for Northern Cyprus. The nuclear option for Mr. Erdogan is a referendum on the future status of the Turkish Cyprus, with choices including independence or becoming part of Turkey. Only such a challenge -- that the northern half of the island could be lost forever -- may prompt the Greek Cypriots to listen to resume negotiations in good faith.

Iraqi President Rules and Divides By: Alexander Reutov | Kommersant
Iraq’s President Jalal Talabani unexpectedly supported on Monday the idea to divide the country along ethnic and religious lines into three regions. That plan has recently been approved by the U.S. Senate. Talabani believes that dividing Iraq will prevent civil war among Shiite and Sunni Muslims and Kurds. So far, it does not mean Iraq’s split-up. However, it gives oil-rich Kurdish north and Shiite south an extra trump card for getting free of Sunni Baghdad’s patronage. However, most experts believe it might later lead to bloodshed unseen by the Middle East since the time of crusades.

Article 41 is just one line in the 16-page document, but to critics, it is the worst. Opponents, including women's rights activists and legal scholars, say the one poorly worded sentence opens the door to rule by draconian interpretations of Islamic law that could sanction the stoning of adulterous women, allow underage girls to be forced into marriage and permit men to abandon their wives by declaring, "I divorce you," three times.

But quite improbably, by seizing on India’s deepening friendship with the United States, Mr. Karat and his party have lately emerged as a sharp and dangerous weapon against the coalition government, making it plain that though the Communists do not have the strength to rule India, they have the power to spoil the plans of those who do.

What they have said about Foreign Press Review
"FPR'ın iki "kötü" özelliği var: 1. Alışkanlık yaratıyor, onsuz yapamaz hale geliyorsunuz; 2. Değeri alındığı değil, arada bir de olsa, alınamadığı vakit anlaşılıyor. Bir de sürekli bir kaygıya yol açıyor; 'Ya bir gün kesilir ve onu hiç alamazsam' duygusuyla sürekli yaşamak kolay değil."

Cengiz Çandar
