Financial Times Blackwater and the outsourcing of war The US relies in Iraq on an army of 180,000 contractors, employed by more than two dozen private companies. Commanders have instructions to hold contractors to military rules of engagement. The US and its allies adhere to the rule of law. That includes ending the impunity of mercenaries. Russian Roulette on Iran Why Moscow is making a U.S. military strike more likely. For Russian President Vladimir Putin, realism is a zero-sum game that maximizes Russian power at U.S. expense. The U.S. can seek Russian cooperation, but for Russian realists, inaction looks like the best option. A nuclear capable Iran is inimical to Russian interests, but Mr. Putin may have seen in Mr. Bush's soul a commitment to deny Tehran nuclear capability at any cost. Iraqi Kurds Sign New Oil Deals By: Ben Lando | UPI
Iraq’s Kurdistan Regional Government made a sudden but not unexpected announcement Tuesday it had signed four more controversial oil deals. While the move highlights success in the region, it comes as the central government in Baghdad struggles to meet long-term agenda items like a national oil law. Iraq’s government reacted to the news in the same vein it has to similar deals in the past: criticizing the KRG for a perceived unilateral move in an oil sector lacking needed identity and saying it is fueling the fire separating KRG-Baghdad compromise.

The deft way in which Vladimir Putin, the Russian president, is trying to ensure he remains in power even after he has left the presidency will ensure that Ukraine remains a recurring theme in US-Russian rivalry. Its role in this geopolitical contest lessens further still the likelihood that Sunday's parliamentary elections will resolve the long-running power struggle between the president, Viktor Yushchenko, and the prime minister, Viktor Yanukovych.

Investors Bullish On Putin, For Now By: Anna Smolchenko and Miriam Elder | The Moscow Times
President Vladimir Putin's clear signals that he intends to hold on to the reins of power may be calming investors' nerves and sending stocks climbing, but that strategy might not bode well for the country in the long term, economists and analysts said Tuesday. Putin agreed Monday to top United Russia's federal party list for State Duma elections and indicated that he might become prime minister after he leaves office next year.

So why not profit both financially and strategically? By MICHAEL RUBIN

H14 Financial Times Blackwater and the outsourcing of war The US relies in Iraq on an army of 180,000 contractors, employed by more than two dozen private companies. Commanders have instructions to hold contractors to military rules of engagement. The US and its allies adhere to the rule of law. That includes ending the impunity of mercenaries. Better still: end reliance on these private armies altogether

Wealth Related to the Culture of Nations By: Gregory Clark | The Japan Times
Modern economists have turned Adam Smith into a prophet, just as communist regimes once deified Karl Marx. The central tenet they attribute to Smith — that good incentives, regardless of culture, produce good results — has become the great commandment of economics. Yet that view is a mistaken interpretation of history (and probably a mistaken reading of Smith).

"FPR'ın iki "kötü" özelliği var: 1. Alışkanlık yaratıyor, onsuz yapamaz hale geliyorsunuz; 2. Değeri alındığı değil, arada bir de olsa, alınamadığı vakit anlaşılıyor. Bir de sürekli bir kaygıya yol açıyor; 'Ya bir gün kesilir ve onu hiç alamazsam' duygusuyla sürekli yaşamak kolay değil."
